The first step in fighting HIV/AIDS is to get the facts. Trail to a Cure volunteers have spent significant time and effort to gather the statistics provided here from the most reputable and knowledgeable sources.

Our purpose is to provide accurate, valid, compelling information to help build awareness about this continuing and growing problem on a local, statewide, national, and global scale.

Selected Facts from the Report

  • There is no vaccine or cure for HIV/AIDS. And while combination drug therapies introduced in the 1990s have extended the lives of many individuals, they do not eradicate HIV in the body.
  • Among those initially responding well to combination drug therapies, around 50% experience treatment failure within a year or two.
  • 1 to 2 of every 10 newly infected people is acquiring strains of HIV that are resistant to current drug therapies.
  • HIV drug therapies cost in excess of $1,200 a month.

HIV/AIDS in Central Missouri

  • In Central Missouri, more than 400 people are living with HIV. Each year another 25 are diagnosed.
  • The number of people living with HIV in Central Missouri has increased more than 25% in five years.
  • Nearly 60% of people living with HIV in Central Missouri are reported as receiving medical care in 2005. 40+% were not in care during that year.

HIV/AIDS in Missouri

  • AIDS has claimed the lives of over 5 thousand Missourians.
  • Another 10 thousand are living with HIV.

HIV/AIDS in the U.S.

  • More than 1 million Americans are living with HIV.
  • Each year another 40 thousand are diagnosed.
  • Approximately 1 in 4 Americans infected with HIV does not know his/her status.
  • The number of women living with HIV has tripled over the past two decades to the point that now 1 in 4 Americans with HIV is a woman.
  • In the US, nearly half of all newly-diagnosed people with HIV are African-Americans.
  • In the US, 50% of all new infections occur among people under the age of 25.

  • AIDS is the most deadly infectious disease on Earth.
  • AIDS has claimed 25 million lives, including over half a million Americans.
